Stuff We Missed

by Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux

A potentially triggering (and extremely disturbing) article about women who undergo vaginal plastic surgery without knowledge of the risks.

Although we’re hearing a lot about how well women are doing in the recession, this article says that unmarried women are falling further and further behind.

The Commission on Civil Rights is investigating whether colleges are discriminating against women in their admission processes.  (Do you think Princeton’s perfect 50/50 gender split is natural?)

An article on Oprah.com asks: do you want to be a feminist or a feminine-ist?  I ask: are you fucking serious?

Happy Veteran’s Day!  Your good holiday-related news for today?  The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is likely to be part of  next year’s Department of Defense authorization bill.

And – because I can – happy birthday to my Dad and to Josh Franklin, two of the most awesome male feminists I’ve ever met!

I know the title of the article on oprah.com seems ridiculous, but I don’t think it deserves an ” are you fucking serious.” The author may have been silly to promote such a weird new word, but I agree that the word “feminist” has taken on connotations that are less than flattering (in some people’s eyes) and she’s right to want to change that image.
